Friday’s Forest Fable
The Lantern That Wasn’t Needed
On the edge of Down Whimsy Way stands the Lantern Fox.
Every evening, just as the sun begins to slip behind the trees, he makes his familiar journey through the village, lighting each lantern one by one.
Some evenings are misty.
Some are windy.
Some are so bright that the moon barely has a chance to shine.
Yet the Lantern Fox lights every lantern all the same.
One evening, a young robin landed on the gate beside him.
“Why are you lighting that one?” she chirped, nodding towards a lantern glowing beside an empty woodland path. “Nobody ever walks that way.”
The Lantern Fox smiled as he struck another match.
“Not tonight,” he replied.
The robin tilted her head.
“But if nobody comes, haven’t you wasted your time?”
The fox hung the lantern on its hook and watched its warm light dance amongst the leaves.
“Perhaps,” he said. “Or perhaps someone will need it when they least expect it.”
The robin wasn’t convinced, but she fluttered away to find her supper.
Later that evening, long after the village had settled into peaceful silence, a tiny hedgehog wandered down the forgotten path.
She had lost her way while collecting blackberries and had begun to worry that home was still far away.
Then, through the trees, she spotted a single glowing lantern.
She followed its warm light until it led her safely back to the village.
As she passed beneath it, she whispered, “Thank goodness someone remembered this path.”
The Lantern Fox never heard her.
By then, he was already lighting the next lantern.
It’s easy to wonder whether the little things we do make any difference.
The kind message.
The thoughtful gift.
The extra few minutes spent wrapping a parcel with care.
The smile offered to a stranger.
Often, we’ll never know who needed that small act of kindness.
But just like the lantern beside the forgotten path, it may have meant everything to someone.
So today, leave your own little lantern.
Send the message.
Make the phone call.
Hold the door.
Share the kindness.
You may never know whose way you’ve helped to light.
Until next Friday’s Forest Fable…
May your path always be bright enough to guide you home, and may you never underestimate the light you bring to others.
With whimsy wishes,
Becky
